Young volunteer officer killed in clash with Sioux Indian raiders in central Minnesota

Twenty-five year old Captain John S. Cady of the 8th Minnesota Regiment was killed during an encounter with Sioux raiders in Kandiyohi County.  The Sioux had stolen horses in Wright County, just fifty miles from St. Paul.  Cady and a small group of his men chased them across Wright and Meeker Counties before engaging them in a firefight.  Hit in the head by a single shot, Cady died almost immediately.  The Sioux escaped.
