The new Hudson River tugboat Greenwood, built recently in Philadelphia, was making its way up the river with a heavy tow for the very first time when its boiler exploded opposite Barrytown, New York. Seven people were killed, including the captain, Henry Briggs, four of the crew, a black crewman's wife, and a captain in one of the barges being towed. The new tug was a complete loss.
