Three soldiers of the Union Army's XXII Corps are executed for desertion

The First Division of XII Corps of the Army of the Potomac carried out its first executions for desertion near Leesburg, Virginia.  William McKee and William Groover of the 46th Pennsylvania, both around twenty years old, and Christopher Kumbar of the 13th New Jersey, an older married man said to have four children, were shot sitting blindfolded on their coffins before the assembled Corps.  They were buried immediately on that spot.  (By John Osborne)
