In Charleston Harbor, after months of bloody attacks and meticulous siege, Union troops occupy Fort Wagner

After several bloody failed attacks and months of siege operations, Union forces were preparing a final morning attack on Fort Wagner, the strongpoint on Morris Island in defense of Charleston. The Confederate garrison, however, had made a skillful withdrawal the night before overnight and Union troops occupied the bastion without resistance. Officers were shocked to find that its main bunker was intact after months of intense bombardment.  (By John Osborne)
