British naval units bombard and largely destroy the Japanese city of Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu

-
British naval units sailed from Yokohama to the port of Kagoshima on Kyushu to demand reparations for earlier depredations in the region controlled by the anti-western Prince of Satsuma .  When fired upon, the British answered with a full scale bombardment of the city and vessels in the harbor.  Casualties were light but Kagoshima suffered extensive material damage and the Satsuma clan eventually gave up its anti-Westernism.
