Major Edgar Burrough, a slave-owning Methodist minister and Confederate cavalry veteran, led partisans based in his home area of Princess Anne County, Virginia. Captured in August 1863, he had been sentenced to death as a guerrilla. He was being treated at the Union Army smallpox hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia when, perhaps believing friends had come to his rescue, he was shot while trying to escape through a window.
