In the campaign against Atlanta, Union forces inflict heavy losses on Confederate troops at the Battle of Ezra Church

During the Union movements around Atlanta, Confederate General J. B. Hood tried to catch Union General Oliver Howard's Army of the Tennessee on the march but was met only by entrenched Union troops near a chapel in Fulton County, Georgia.  Although they did protect the rail line that was the main Union target, the attack was a disaster for Hood's men who lost around 3000 of their number.  Howard lost less than 700 killed and wounded in the day-long fighting.
