Colonel Norval E. Welch commanded the Sixteenth Michigan Volunteer Infantry at Little Round Top the year before and was again in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Peeble's Farm. The 29-year old from Ann Arbor, leading his regiment in a direct attack on an entrenched Confederate position, reportedly leaped sword in hand over the enemy parapet, before being shot down moments later, hit in the head with two musket balls.
