The Passionist Order of the Catholic Church dedicated St. Michael's Monastery in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City). The small order, first introduced into the United States in 1852, began the construction of the five-storey building the previous May at a cost of around $46,000. Its first Father Superior was the Very Reverend Dominic Tartelini. Sold at the end of the twentieth century, it remains a national historic place. (John Osborne)
