Near Savannah, Georgia, Fort McAllister falls to Union troops and Sherman makes contact with the U.S. Navy

Fort McAllister, near Savannah, Georgia, was the last Confederate obstacle to General W.S. Sherman's "March to the Sea" from Atlanta.  Union General William Hazen's division of the XVth Corps took the strongpoint by storm, capturing around two hundred defenders.  This action enabled Sherman capture Savannah and to reach the sea and make direct contact with Admiral Dahlgren's fleet off the Georgia coast.
