In Virginia, Confederate General A.P. Hill is killed riding in front of the Confederate lines at Petersburg

A career soldier, Lieutenant-General Ambrose Powell Hill was one of the most successful corps commanders of the war and played a large part in the success of the Army of Northern Virginia throughout.  He had been seriously handicapped with ill-health, however, complicated by a sexually transmitted disease contracted while a cadet at West Point. He was killed by the rifle fire of a Pennsylvania infantry corporal named John W. Mauck during the last stages of the battle for Petersburg.  He was buried in Richmond. He was thirty-nine years old.
