The last great Sanitary Fair of the war to raise funds for the United States Sanitary Commission and the Chicago Soldiers' Home had opened in Chicago, Illinois on May 30, 1865. The affair, with its centerpiece of Union Hall among the specially constructed buildings near the lakefront, raised more than $270,000 for sick and wounded soldiers.
