A growing tradition amongst New Jersey farmers of the time had been to agree on the second Saturday in August, following the harvest, to be set aside for an excursion away from the farm. Accordingly, on this day hundreds of New Jersey farmers and their families made their way to places like Raritan Bay, near Amboy, New Jersey for a rare respite from farm life. (By John Osborne)
