General Gerardo Barrios had been president of El Salvador between March 1859 and October 1865. He had a strong reputation as a liberal reformer who often clashed with the Catholic hierarchy. He had been deposed when defeated in a war with Guatemala in 1863 and replaced by Francisco Dueñas. In exile he had fallen into the hands of Nicaraguan conservatives who had him extradited to his homeland where he was tried and shot. (By John Osborne)
