Spanish naval units bombard the Peruvian port of Callao

In the continuing hostilities between Spain and the Peruvian-Chilean alliance, Spanish naval units began at noon a bombardment of the Peruvian port of Callao.  Defending batteries ashore were damaged and the Peruvian War Minister, Jose Galvez, killed but also replied with heavy fire against the Spanish, disabling the Spanish flagship and wounding their admiral before the bombardment ended around five in the afternoon.  (By John Osborne)
