James Stephens was the founder and leader of the Irish Republican Brotherhood who had escaped from a British prison the previous year and fled to France. Despite the fractured nature of Irish nationalism at tht time, his arrival in the United States at Pier Fifty in Manhattan was met with enthusiastic crowds of Irish immigrants at the dock and at the Metropolitan Hotel where he lodged for the next few weeks.
