Lietenant-General Winfield Scott, legendary army commander and presidential candidate, had died at the West Point Hotel on May 29, 1866, two weeks before his eightieth birthday. A hero of the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the architect of Union victory in the Civil War, and an anti-slavery Virginian, the 6 foot five inch soldier was buried at the Military Academy Cemetery with full honors, many military and national dignitaries attending.
