Ismail Pasha was proclaimed as the Turkish governor of Egypt and the Sudan two days after the death of his uncle, Said I. In 1867, he was confirmed in the more prestigious title of Khedive, or Viceroy. He ruled the provinces as a reformer, gaining the name of "Ismail the Magnificant" but was removed from power in 1879.
