A week before, French forces under Foreign Legion commander Brigadier General Jean Pierre Joseph Jeanningros had evacuated the northeast Mexico city of Monterrey. Now Republican forces occupied the nearby city of Tampico. By the end of September 1866, the only towns in the north of the country remaining in Imperialist hands were Durango and Mazatlan.
