Along the Monongahela River, large crowds turn out to watch a five-mile sculling race for $2000.

On a five mile course on the Upper Monongahela River near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, well-known professional single scullers John Mekiel of New York and Harry Coulter of Manchester, New Hampshire competed for a $2000 stake. Coulter pulled away in the latter stages and won by eight lengths in a time of 41 minutes and 51 seconds.  Coulter later went on to become a famous rowing coach at Cornell University.  (By John Osborne)
