Headnote

WINCHESTER, A post village of Clark county, Jackson township, situated on Honey creek, 12 miles from Waterloo, the county seat, 200 from St. Louis, and 160 from Jefferson City.  The post office has been established fifteen years.  It contains one attorney, two blacksmiths, one pork packer, two brick yards, three carpenters, two wagon makers, one clothing store, three flouring mills, one general, two grocers, one hotel, three painters, three physicians, etc..  There are two stage routes, one to Alexandria, 10 miles, and one to Canton, 16 miles.  The Masons have a lodge here, viz.:  Winchester Lodge, No. 177.  There are three churches, Baptist, Rev. J.S. Smith, pastor, Methodist Episcopal, Rev. D. Mason, pastor, and CHristian church, under the patronage of Rev. F.J. Matlock. The chief products are corn, wheat, oats, rye, and barley, and potatoes. Timber, oak, walnut, sugar tree, and hickory.  The average price of uncultivated land from $6 to $12 per acre $20 per acre, and cultivated cultivated $10 to $40. Population 220.  (The Missouri State Gazetteer and Business Directory, 1860)
