AUGUSTA COUNTY, situated in the central part of Virginia, and drained by the tributaries of James and Shenandoah rivers. Superficial extent 30 miles square, or 900 square miles, The face of the country undulating and somewhat hilly; the soil varied, but generally productive. Courts are held at Staunton. Pop. in 1820. 16,742; in 1830, 19,926; in 1840, 19,628; in 1850, 24,610. (Fannings,1853)
