Harriet Tubman leads an armed raid against Confederate forces in South Carolina

-

Becoming the first woman to do so in the Civil War, Harriet Tubman was credited with planning and guiding a significant armed raid by Colonel James Montgomery's 2nd South Carolina (African Descent) against Confederate forces, supply depots, and plantations along the Combahee River in coastal South Carolina. Union naval vessels brought back more than 800 slaves, many of whom enlisted in the Union Army. (By James Chapnick )
