William Still is hired by the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery

Hired as a clerk by the society, this was the beginning of Still's career as an abolitionist and Underground Railroad operator. Over a period of fourteen years with the society, with varying official roles, Still encountered many of the fugitive slaves who passed through Philadelphia, and kept records of their experiences.
