Buncombe County, N.C., c.h. at Ashville. On the W. border. The Nolachucky and French Broad River and tributaries water this county. BUNCOMBE COUNTY, situated on the northwest boundary of North Carolina. Length, 65 ms., mean width, 22; with an area of 1,430 square miles. The surface is generally hilly and mountainous; the soil rocky though fertile. Seat of justice, Ashville. Pop. in 1830, 16,281; in 1840, 10,084; in 1850, 13,425. (Fanning's, 1853)
