SOMERSET COUNTY, situated in the southeast part of Maryland, with Pocomoke bay and Tangier sound (indentations of Chesapeake bay) on the southwest.  Area, 500 square miles.  Face of the country, level; soil sandy, but generally productive.  Seat of justice, Princess Anne.  Pop. in 1810, 17,195; in 1830, 19,579; in 1830, 20166; in 1840, 19,508; in 1850, 22,056.
