BROOKE COUNTY, situated in the extreme north part of Virginia, between the Ohio river and Pennsylvania line. Length 30 miles; mean width 5; with an area of 150 square miles. The surface is extremely hilly, and the soil fertile. Seat of justice, Willsburgh. Pop. in 1820, 6,611; in 1830, 7,041; in 1840, 7,948; in 1850, 5,054. (Fanning's, 1853)
