Lord Elgin, the British envoy, arrived in Japan and negotiated a commercial treaty that opened Japan to British commerce. Yedo was the eastern capital of Japan and the British Embassy was opened there. Around 1869 the name of the capital was changed to Tokyo. (By John Osborne)
