The premiere of Guiseppe Verdi's opera Masked Ball took place at the Teatro Apollo in Rome. The story of assassination and intrigue was originally set in Stockholm but Italian nervousness over political murder prompted the original premiere in Naples to be canceled and the opera's setting to be moved to seventeenth century Boston.
