BELMONT COUNTY, situated in the east part of Ohio, on the westerly side of Ohio river. Length, 25 miles; mean breadth, 20; with an area of 500 square miles. The face of the country is hilly; the soil generally very productive. Seat of justice, St. Clairsville. Pop. in 1820 2,329; in 1830, 28,627; in 1840, 30,901; in 1850 34,600. (Fanning's, 1853)
