INCENDIARY ATTEMPT AT SACRAMENTO. – A daring and most dastardly attempt at incendiarism was made about two o’clock in the morning of 14th July, by setting fire to the vacant shanty on J street, Sacramento, next to Crocker & Co.’s dry goods establishment. A quantity of camphene was poured upon the cotton ceiling of the house, after which a bunch of cotton saturated with camphene was thrown on the canvas, but, luckily, it overshot the mark, and, burning through the cotton, fell to the floor, at the same time setting fire to the muslin lining. At this juncture the clerk of the St. Charles Hotel, which is next door but one to the premises, happened at the door, and smelling camphene, discovered the fire, and extinguished it without creating an alarm. Had it not been seen at the moment it was, the adjoining building, occupied by J. R. Tolles, would have been in flames, and there is reason to believe that several lives would have been lost, as the family of Mr. Tolles occupy the building, which is of the most combustible material, and the means of egress are of the most contracted character, and so much so, that it is almost fearful to contemplate their narrow escape. There seems to be a band of incendiaries prowling about Sacramento. – Sacramento Bee.
