WASHINGTON COUNTY, situated at the southeast corner of Maine, with the Atlantic ocean on the southeast St. Croix river and Passamaquoddy bay on the northeast, and Schoodic lake toward the north. Area, 3,500 square miles. Face of the country, uneven; soil, suitable for grazing. Seat of justice, Machias. Pop. in 1810, 7,870; in 1820, 12,744; in 1830, 21,295; in 1840, 28,327; in 1850, 38,113.
