The number of prisoners in Indiana state prisons reaches a peak

The State of Indiana reported that at the end of the fiscal year for 1859, 556 inmates remained in state prisons.  This figure turned out the be the highest number reported between the year of statehood in 1816 and 1878.  (By John Osborne)
