Abolitionist lecture delivered successfully in Philadelphia as police and rioters battle outside the hall

In a heated atmosphere in Philadelphia, Mayor Alexander Henry and 600 hundred of his police ensured that the lecture by abolitionist George W. Curtis at the People's Literary Institute on Market Street went ahead.  Despite the presence of a large mob of anti-abolitionist rioters which surrounded the hall throwing bricks and making several attacks on the main doors, the lecture was given and the meeting completed successfully.  (By John Osborne)
