Steamship from San Francisco to Oregon wrecked and thirty passengers and crew drown
The side-wheel steamship Northerner had sailed from San Francisco two days before bound for Portland in Oregon Territory. It struck a rock off Cape Medicino, began to take on water, was beached near the northern side of Cape Fortunas, and smashed up in a gale that had developed. Seventeen passengers and twenty-one crew members were drowned. (By John Osborne)
