JEFFERSON PARISH, situated in the southeasterly part of Louisiana, traversed by the Mississippi, and bounded by bayous and inlets of the gulf of Mexico. Area, 720 square miles. Face of the country low and level; soil generally unproductive. Seat of justice, La Fayette. Pop. in 1830, 6,846; in 1840, 10,470; in 1850, 25,091.
