ORLEANS PARISH, situated in the southeast part of Louisiana, with Lake Pontchartrain on the northwest, Lake Borgne on the southeast, and Mississippi river on the southwest. Area, 160 square miles. Face of the country flat and marshy. Seat of justice, New Orleans. Pop. in 1810, 24,552; in 1820, 41,351; in 1830, 49,826; in 1840, 102,193; in 1850, 119,461.
