ASHE COUNTY, situated in the northwest part of North Carolina, and drained by branches of the Great Kanawha and Holston rivers. Length, 64 miles; mean breadth, 120, covering an area of 768 square miles. The face of the country is generally hilly and mountainous, the air pure and healthy, and the soil in many parts productive. Courts are held at Jefferson. Pop., in 1820, 4,335; in 1830, 6,987; in 1840 7,467; in 1850, 8,777.
