BRUNSWICK COUNTY, on the southern boundary of North Carolina, with Cape Fear river on the east, and the Atlantic ocean on the south. Area 1,344 square miles. The surface is level on the south level, abounding in marshes, and the soil is generally poor and thin. Seat of justice, Smithville. Pop in 1820 5,480; in 1830, 6,523; in 1840, 5,265; in 1850, 7,272.
