CARTERET COUNTY, situated on the southeast boundary of North Carolina, on the Atlantic ocean. Area, 600 square miles. Face of the country level; soil generally sandy, but in part marshy. Seat of justice, Beaufort. Pop. in 1830, 5,609; in 1830, 6,607; in 1840, 6,591; in 1850, 6,803.
