Johnson, Asbury

Asbury Johnson was a minister in New York who served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. His father, Reverend W. M. Johnson, rode the Kinderhook circuit in New York. Asbury grew up in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and, on June 26, 1864, joined the 22nd USCT Regiment. While fighting in the campaigns around Petersburg, Pennsylvania, Johnson became sick and was transferred to a hospital at Fortress Monroe. He was later sent back home, where he died surrounded by his family on February 3, 1865. Johnson was buried in Waverly, Pennsylvania. Records do not indicate that he married. (By Don Sailer)
