Harvey, John

John Harvey was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 1837 and later served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to Harvey’s service records, he worked as a laborer before the war. In July 1863 he went Greensburg, Pennsylvania and joined Company B of the 6th USCT. Harvey served as a substitute for a man named David Porter. His company was first sent to Virginia and participated in several operations in that area. In late September 1864, Harvey was wounded and spent several months in the General Hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He returned to his company by early 1865. After Confederates surrendered in April 1865, the War Department sent the 6th USCT to Wilmington, North Carolina. Harvey mustered out while in Wilmington on September 20, 1865, but records indicate that he was admitted to the General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in October 1865. It remains unclear how long he remained there. Harvey died in May 1877 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, Pennsylvania. (By Don Sailer)
