George Hezekiah Imes was born in 1844 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and, at the age of twenty two, joined the 43rd United States Colored Troops regiment. Imes served in the regiment for seventeen months from March 1864 to October 1865. Imes was promoted to the rank of sergeant before his discharge. After leaving the regiment, Imes married Lucinda Armstrong Clark in 1870 and settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to raise several children. He became one of four black principals in the city’s public school district in 1880 through his work at the Hygienic School. In 1892, Imes died in McAllisterville, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, not far from the town in which he was raised. (By Brandon Rothenberg)
