Cook, Samuel

Samuel Cook was born in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and later served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to Cook’s service records, he was a laborer before the war. On February 29, 1864, Cook joined Company K of the 32nd USCT. He received training at Camp William Penn, where he received a promotion to Sergeant on March 18. The War Department sent the 32nd USCT to South Carolina in April 1864, where it remained for the duration of the war. In January 1865 Colonel George W. Baird ordered that Sergeant Cook be reduced in rank to private for an unspecified reason. His military service ended while stationed in Hilton Head, South Carolina on August 22, 1865. Cook died in June 1915 and was buried at the Jersey Shore Cemetery in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. (By Don Sailer)
