Jacob Winters was born in Beckley County, Virginia around 1844. He went on to become a private in Company D of the 22nd United States Colored Troops Regiment. Winters enlisted for a three year term on December 17, 1863 in Chambersburg as a nineteen year old. Enlistment records describe him as being five feet and three inches tall with grey eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. He returned to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania after the war and married his wife Margaret. The two had at least four children. Winters passed away on January 4, 1915 and was buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
