Pinkney, John W.

John W. Pinkney was born in Frederick City, Maryland around 1845. He worked as a farmer prior to enlisting as a private in Company D of the 22nd United States Colored Troops Regiment during the Civil War. He signed on for a three year term in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania on December 22, 1863. Pinkney’s records list him as five feet and about ten inches tall with a black complexion. He was wounded in action before the Battle of Petersburg on June 15, 1864 and discharged from the army on January 19, 1865. Pinkney died on December 4, 1882 and was buried in the Lincoln Colored Cemetery in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
