John Edward Lee was born in Charles, Maryland around 1845 and worked as a laborer prior to his service in the Civil War. He went on to become a corporal in Company K of the 32nd United States Colored Troops after enlisting for a three year term in Pottsville, Pennsylvania at age nineteen on March 3, 1864. Lee was about five feet and six inches tall. One month after Lee’s enlistment, the 32nd left their training camp in Philadelphia, Camp William Penn, for South Carolina, where they would serve out the remainder of the war. Lee’s regiment arrived in Hilton Head, South Carolina on April 27, 1864. In November, the 32nd fought in the battle of Honey Hill and in 1865 the regiment participated in the occupations of Charleston and Camden. The 32nd mustered out on August 22, 1865. Over the course of the war, Lee’s regiment lost 150 men, 113 to disease. He died on March 22, 1913 and was buried in Pottsville AME Church Cemetery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
