Bronson, Lewis

Lewis Bronson was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania and served in the 5th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. According to his service records, Bronson was a farmer before the war. In February 1864 Bronson went to Boston and joined the 5th Massachusetts. In May 1864 Bronson’s regiment was sent to Washington, DC and later moved to Fortress Monroe, Virginia. Bronson was sent to the regimental hospital in September 1864 and, on November 10, received a “sick furlough” that allowed him to return to Pennsylvania. While he returned to his regiment in early 1865, he would remain in various hospitals in Virginia for the rest of the war. Bronson’s records are unclear, but he apparently was discharged from his regiment sometime between September 16 and October 31, 1865. (By Don Sailer)
