Absalom Arter was born in 1845 in Charleston, Virginia and later fought in the United States Colored Troops. Arter enlisted in Company H of the 22nd USCT on December 23, 1863 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Upon enlistment, Arter described himself as being a five-foot tall, 18 years- old, with a yellow complexion, black eyes and black hair. Arter worked as a farmer before enlisting in the army for three years. On February 26, 1864 Arter was marked as absent on his company’s muster roll because he was sick. Arter fell ill again on July 8, and remained absent from active duty for two months. Arter’s regiment fought in the battle of Chaffin’s Farm on September 29 and 30 in New Market Heights, Virginia and in the battle of Fair Oaks on October 27 and 28. On October 16, 1865, Arter mustered out of Company H in Brownsville, Texas. He died on February 2, 1923 and was buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania. (By Rebecca Solnit)
