Campbell, A.B.

A.B. Campbell was a sergeant in Company K of the 41st United States Colored Troops Regiment. The 41st trained at Camp William Penn in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until being called to join the Army of the James in Virginia on October 18, 1864. Campbell’s regiment fought in the battle of Fair Oaks on October 27 and 28, 1864, and the battle of Hatcher’s Run from March 28 to 31, 1865. After the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, the 41st left for Texas, where they remained until mustering out in September, 1865. Campbell originally laid to rest in the Lincoln Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but was reinterred in the Lincoln Section of Woodlawn Cemetery, also in Pittsburgh, in 1938. (By Rebecca Solnit)
